The Playhouse: Artist Housing
Site Location: Old Goucher, Baltimore
The Playhouse is a mixed-use space that allows artists to work and live in the same space, and is located to an adjacent urban green space that acts as both a performance/exhibition area and a plaza. Each of the four artists living spaces has a specifically designed studio space and connection with an exhibition area. The four apartment units, each with its own studio houses a cinema artist, performance artist/actor, sculptor, and a painter. Each unit has a direct connection to a “creative element” that pertains to their craft and their work. The theater and green space is organized around the main light wall and the light tube. All circulation up and down the building runs through this wall, and the wall also acts as a surface where there is play between the idea of inside and outside. The green space is organized to deal with the connection to the activity on 24th and 25th streets, as noise and activity diffuses, so does the activity in the plaza, turning from a high activity to a more landscaped area.
